Innovation in the Classroom

Inspiring Innovation in Crandall ISD

Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, the Heartland Education Foundation proudly implemented the VEX Robotics elective course for students at both Heartland Middle School and Central Middle School.

Through the Foundation’s investment, the classroom materials and VEX IQ robotics kits necessary to launch and sustain the program were fully provided, removing barriers and ensuring students had immediate access to hands-on STEM learning. This commitment reflects the Foundation’s mission to expand innovative educational opportunities and equip Crandall ISD students with the skills needed for a technology-driven future.

The VEX Robotics course was designed to enrich the middle school experience by immersing students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through real-world application. By bringing this program to life, the Heartland Education Foundation helped create a pathway for students to explore engineering concepts, develop programming skills, and build confidence as problem-solvers and collaborators.

Why Robotics?

Today’s rapidly evolving world demands strong proficiency in STEM fields. Robotics education uniquely supports the development of these skills by combining:

  • Mechanical design
  • Computer programming
  • Engineering principles
  • Critical thinking
  • Collaboration and communication

Introducing robotics at the middle school level cultivates early interest in STEM pathways and gives students a strong foundation as they move into advanced coursework in high school and beyond.

Benefits of the VEX Robotics Program

Academic Growth

Robotics strengthens problem-solving, creativity, logical reasoning, and perseverance — skills that positively impact learning across all subject areas.

Career Readiness

Students gain early exposure to engineering concepts and coding through both block-based and introductory text-based programming. This experience can spark interest in high-demand STEM careers.

Engagement & Access

Robotics offers hands-on, project-based learning that engages a wide range of learners. Students who thrive in interactive environments benefit from opportunities to design, build, test, and refine real-world solutions.

Competition Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to compete in VEX Robotics competitions at regional, state, and potentially national levels. These experiences build confidence, teamwork, and school pride while showcasing student innovation.

Alignment with District Goals

The VEX Robotics course supports Crandall ISD’s Goal No. 1 — advancing student learning, growth, and college and career readiness while striving to earn an “A” rating in the Texas Education Agency Accountability System.

What Students Will Experience

The Robotics elective incorporates:

  • Foundational engineering principles
  • Hands-on robot design and construction
  • Programming and autonomous coding challenges
  • Team-based projects
  • Competition preparation

Students work collaboratively to solve real engineering challenges using the VEX IQ system, which includes structural components, sensors, motors, and programmable technology. Through the design process, students learn to test, analyze, revise, and improve their work — building resilience and confidence along the way.

Powered by Community Support

By providing the classroom materials needed to run the program, the Foundation has ensured that Crandall ISD students can access innovative, hands-on STEM education beginning in the 2025–2026 school year.

This program represents more than a new elective. It represents an investment in future innovators, creators, engineers, and leaders.

Heartland Education Foundation is proud to expand opportunities that empower students to build boldly, think critically, and lead confidently into the future.
